00:00:06

Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day.

00:00:13

Thank you very much for coming here, man.

00:00:14

I really appreciate it.

00:00:15

Oh, thank you for inviting me, Joe.

00:00:16

My pleasure.

00:00:17

This subject, first of all, the title of your book?

00:00:20

Cobalt Red.

00:00:22

And it is out January 31st.

00:00:25

And how did you, please detail the journey that you went on to write this book and why it's of concern to you?

00:00:35

Yeah, okay.

00:00:36

Well, I started traveling to the Congo five years ago.

00:00:42

I've been doing research on slavery and child labor for about 20 years, traveling all around the world, documenting slaves and child labor as human trafficking.

00:00:50

And this came across my radar maybe seven years ago.

00:00:55

People started talking in the field about cobalt, cobalt's in the batteries, it's in the Congo, the conditions are horrible, and I had no idea.

00:01:04

I never heard of this.

00:01:05

So I started planning to take trips to get down there.

00:01:09

And I took my first trip back in 2018.

00:01:13

My plan was I thought I would try to lay the groundwork to do some academic research.

00:01:20

And the things I saw there were so appalling and heart-wrenching and urgent that I changed my approach.
